As some of you may know, though many are probably unaware, World AIDS Day is December 1. This is a day for all of us around the world to recognize the impact of HIV/AIDS internationally, nationally, and locally.

Worldwide, over 33 million people are living with HIV/AIDS. In 2006, over 4.9 million new infections were reported and the rate of infection in the US increased 40%. In Kansas City alone, over 5,700 people are living with HIV/AIDS - 700 of them young people between the ages 13 and 24. In light of recent reports that the US government has under-reported the infection rate by 40%, nearly 9,000 Kansas Citians may be living with the disease. In Kansas City, the 2008 World AIDS Day Week of Observance will kick-off with a reception to be held on Monday, December 1st from 6 to 8 p.m. at Vanderslice Hall, located on the campus of the Kansas City Art Institute. On Tuesday, December 2nd, the AIDS Service Foundation will host a Community Luncheon at the Kauffman Foundation Conference Center from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. This year's Community Luncheon will feature Dr. Kevin Fenton of the Center for Disease Control.
