Hope Is A Waking Dream

An Iraqi woman holds up her hand and shows a purple finger, indicating she has just voted, as she leaves a polling station in the centre of Az Zubayr, southern Iraq. Iraqis turned out to vote Sunday in their country's first free election in a half-century, defying insurgents who launched deadly suicide bombings and mortar strikes at polling stations. I love that ink-on-the-finger thing... We should only be so proud!

right on . . .

we should only be so proud, but why aren't we ?

as nice as it is to see the hope of the Iraqi people, I have a feeling their "election" yesterday will not account for much more than a geopolitical strategic mirage.

the question I am currently asking myself is, "does the ends (a possible democratic government in only one Middle East country) justify the means ?

- 18,000 dead Iraqi citizens
- 1,000 dead US soldiers
- 4,000 severely mentally and physically injured or amputated US soldiers
- $150 billion dollars *

* (which is equal to health insurance for 91,338,263 US children for one year; 1,373,431 housing units built for the homeless; 643,453 additional public school teachers for one year; fully funded global anti-hunger efforts for 6 years; or fully funded world-wide AIDS programs for 15 years . . . take your pick.

was it worth it ? we probably won't know that for decades.

I sure hope so, those people deserve the best.
